'Independent Children'

9) How to make very young children (2.5 to 5 year olds) self-directed and independent when they take up and do work on their own? They seem to need constant supervision even when parents are busy with other tasks.

When a child has left something unfinished or half-done and we see it: With Casa children two possibilities arise:

The child is capable of completing (or) The child isn't capable of completing. If the child is capable, we need to make sure that, before the child goes into a new big work, the incomplete work has been wrapped up by the child. If the child has already moved on, mid-way, inform and make sure she/ he completes the first one after he/ she completes the current task. Make sure that under no circumstances someone else does the job for her/him. This consistency is needed, even if it is delayed. Once this is followed on a regular basis, the child will understand what is expected of her/ him and do it without supervision. This takes time and lot of patience from adults. If the child is incapable of actually taking and completing the task, but still wants to do it, outline the steps, and where you will help or collaborate and slowly step back to let him or her do it after your role is done. Some children know they are capable but want to avoid effort. For them, consistency of the adult in ensuring completion of the task is what really helps.
